XAMPP

As you all know, setting up apache and php and mysql and all of that is a pain. And if you are looking to set up a quick test bed or to set up a light, non obtrusive way to develop local than setting those things up on your main machine is not really an option. Because of this, several little tools have popped up to help deal with that. I have never been thrilled with any of them until now. I ran across one today which I think has a lot of potential. It is called XAMPP.

XAMPP

Once installed you can run Apache HTTPD 2.2.0, MySQL 5.0.18, PHP 5.1.1 + 4.4.1 pl1 + PEAR + Switch, MiniPerl 5.8.7, mod_ssl 2.0.55, Openssl 0.9.8a, PHPMyAdmin 2.7.0 pl1, eAccelerator 0.9.4, Webalizer 2.01-10, Mercury Mail Transport System, FileZilla FTP Server 0.9.10a, SQLite 2.8.15, ADODB 4.65 and Zend Optimizer 2.5.10a. The incredible thing about this one though is that you can run all of that off a usb thumb drive! All you have to do is drop the folder in the root of your drive and that’s it!

Now, I have only been playing with this for a couple hours now so the jury is still out. But this has a lot of potential and I can’t wait to put it to good use.
